Meet the Chef
Award-winning Chef Mark Thompson knows food. He has been involved in the food service industry since his days in the United States Army. Thompson cooked for six years with the military before entering Johnson & Wales right after Hurricane Hugo hit Charleston. He was a member of the culinary school’s fourth graduating class.
By the time he was 28 years old, Thompson was co-owner of a meat and vegetable restaurant in upstate South Carolina. He has also been a chef at the prestigious Thornblade Country Club in Greenville.
But long before his days as a restaurateur, or even before his Johnson & Wales days, Thompson knew he was destined to be in the food business. Although he’s the first professionally-trained chef in his family, Thompson comes for a long line of culinary enthusiasts. His grandparents arrived in the United States back in the early 1900s from Greece, and his grandfather ran a deli. “It has kind of been in my blood my whole life,” says Thompson.
Thompson also has served for many years on the board of Carolina Children’s Charity, a cause to whom he is fiercely loyal.
